We recently did a post on how to wash your fresh laid poultry eggs properly. Following that, it only seemed fair to provide you with valuable tips for storing these eggs properly. First things first, it is important to make sure the eggs are clean before you store them. For tips on how to do that, read our post on How to Clean Freshly-Laid Eggs.
Once the eggs have been cleaned and washed properly, you have two basic options for storing them: you can either pop them in the fridge or store them at room temperature.
Pro Tip: If you have cleaned the eggs in a way that you suspect their bloom has been removed, it is better to keep them in the fridge.
Whichever method of storage you choose, make sure you are doing it right. Here are a handful of tips for each that will make sure you don’t go wrong with egg storage.
Storing in the Fridge
Storing the fresh laid eggs in the fridge makes sure your eggs stay fresh for a longer period of time. The best way to go about it is to place the eggs in an egg carton or one of the air-tight containers that you can easily find at home.
You can store the eggs in the fridge for up to 6 months’ time and they will still taste fresh. You may however, find that the egg whites remain slightly runny, which is not really a problem; but if it does concern you, label your egg cartons date wise so that you know which eggs to consume first.
Storing At Room Temperature
Stored at room temperature, fresh eggs usually last at least up to a month. Unlike fridge storage, you do not require air-tight containers or lidded cartons to store eggs at room temperature. You can simply arrange the, on a plastic egg tray or in a simple egg basket lined with straw. When storing eggs at room temperature it is better to consume them as soon as you can.
Although they will last outside in normal temperature for more than a month without going bad, it is recommended to move these eggs into the fridge once the month-long duration ends. It is even better if you consume these eggs within two weeks, because they obviously taste better.
At this point, we feel it is important to mention the fact that storing eggs at room temperature works best in situations where you have rapid egg consumption. It is basically a means of short-term storage. If you want to keep the eggs fresh for longer, keep them in the fridge. It’ll keep the eggs from rotting away and make sure you have fresh home-grown eggs for breakfast for a much longer duration.
