Equestrian Essentials: The Story of Jodhpurs

Have you ever wondered why jodhpurs have an exotic name? When were they made? Where do they come from?

The story of its creation is buried deep within the sands of time just like the city it was named after.

Jodhpurs: A Rider’s Quest for Comfort

The Rajputs of India were great warriors and experienced equestrians. They reared and bred troops of horses that were their honour and pride.

In the late 1800s, one such Rajput who went by the name, Sir Pratap Singh was facing some trouble mounting his horse. His British trousers helped him remain steady but they restricted his movement. On the other hand, the traditional flowing cuts of his pajama, though comfortable made him fall over.

Therefore the raja of Idhar ordered his tailor to design something that was comfortable and practical. This gave birth to the churidar-inspired jodhpurs.

The pants were tightly fitted from the ankle to the calf but were baggy in the upper thigh region.

It was the perfect blend of balance and movement. Pratap Sing showcased his practical pants in the next polo match. The British rulers were mighty impressed and started donning the famous pants they named jodhpurs.

Equestrian Essential

In the present times, jodhpurs have become an equestrian staple. Almost every rider has a pair of these pants. This is because they are truly better at tolerating through the tedious riding sessions on the grounds. Other pants like jeans and leggings usually wear and tear, making a rider’s wardrobe situation very stressful.

Do they look like the ‘churidars’ of yore?

No. After they traveled across the seas, the jodhpurs got a makeover. First, the Victorian gave it a British spin and then the modern industries modified the fabric.

The jodhpurs available to you have:

  • Stretchy fabric that doesn’t restrict your movement
  • Knee pads that cushion the vulnerable area
  • Breathable material
  • Leather linings to keep you steady on the horse

Wearing jodhpurs help you maintain your balance on a jumpy horse. It also cushions the blows you get when a horse jolts or when you want to ride roughly.
