Poultry Problems: How Do I Clean My Eggs?

Speckled eggs are perfectly fine. But dirty, grubby eggs are oh-so-unappetising!

Your unhygienic egg production won’t do you any favours in the farmer’s market. Nor will they be well- received amongst your peers. So what should you do?

Quit chicken farming? Stop selling eggs? This isn’t exactly a solution to this standard problem. Rather it is a cowardly act that unburdens you from the hard work.

Therefore, it is better to buckle up and note down the several options you have for getting spotless eggs.

Let’s take a look at a few of the tried methods:

1. The Nest Box

Most of your eggs are unclean because of the mother hens and rest of the flock. And in spite of your frequent cleanups they are bound to be covered in chicken poop. The best way to navigate from this messy situation is to get a nest box.

Then place it at a distance from the door and away from the rooster. This will ensure that the nest boxes get less foot traffic. In addition to that, regularly clean and freshen the boxes when you collect your eggs.

2. The Wet Method

Wet-washing is a highly controversial method as it exposes the eggs to chemicals. But it is the only way to get the stubborn grime and egg yolk off your undamaged eggs. Thus, many egg suppliers are in favour of this technique.

Here is what you have to do:

  • Wash your eggs under warm running water
  • Dry the eggs with a soft dry wipe
  • Spray the eggs with an egg-friendly disinfectant
  • Let the eggs dry and then store them

Other tips include:

  • Using cooking oil to close pores and give your eggs a glossy shine
  • Removing hard stains with the help of warm vinegar

3. The Dry Method

A less controversial way to clean the eggs is the dry method. It simply requires you to rub off the grub and poop with clean, dry material. Your cleaning tool could be a loofah, sandpaper or a rough sponge. In this way, you get the eggs clean without using any chemicals. More importantly, this particular method helps you to preserves the fragile bloom.

However, do sanitise your cleaning tool on a regular basis. Plus, use new ones when the old wipes start to get worn out. Lastly, in all three cases, make sure to handle the eggs gently. Otherwise, you’ll have another kind of poultry problem at your hands.

So which method will you be utilising?
